GLPIC Director’s message on the occasion of the launch of the website www.glpic.org

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We are delighted to officially launch today the website of the NGO Great Lakes Peace Initiative Center (GLPIC), which link is : www.glpic.org.

Initiated by Mr. Guilain Mathe, GLPIC was formally created on February 9, 2010 by young African Researchers and Human Rights Defenders based in Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The NGO is devoted to bring academics from thought to action in order to contribute to the improvement of Human Security in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially in the African Great Lakes Region, by Defending Human Rights and promoting Good Governance and the Rule of Law. In doing so, the GLPIC action focuses on three pillars : Research, Building capacities and Advocacy.

For remembrance, this region of Africa is undermined by the worst Humanitarian crisis of the post second world-war era started by the Rwandan genocide in 1994 (800,000 deaths) followed by the two Congo wars in 1996 and 1998 that led to the burning of the entire region (more than 5 million deaths). Although the Congolese war is officially ended since 2003, the Eastern DRC has not returned to peace. Violence, killings, fear and threats caused by armed rebellions and official armies remain a daily bread of the civil population. Ms. Margot Wallström didn’t hesitate to qualify the DRC in April 2010 to be “world capital of women rape”, while the number of children-soldiers remains catastrophic. Human Rights Defenders and Researchers as well remain targeted, threaten and harmed because of the work on the ground. Although the countries of the region have engaged into democratic processes, the Human Security and general well-being in the region remain facing a wide number of challenges which overcoming led to the creation of the GLPIC NGO.

The GLPIC staff thanks very much all those good willing Individuals and Organizations who have encouraged and supported the process of its website conception. This is a powerful tool to enable the GLPIC effective action of promoting Human Security in accordance with the globalization requirements.

We are especially delighted to launch the GLPIC website in the lake of the International Academic Freedom Day to be celebrated on October 4, 2011 ; and which implies the Scholars at Risk Network (SAR) and the Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund (SRF/IIE) whose encouragements and support were meaningful to make our ambition become reality.

We strongly hope that the modest and worthy task of the GLPIC NGO will benefit from support, advice and sharing experience through collaboration and partnership with NGOs, Foundations and Academic institutions from all over the world willing to build a more peaceful world without fear and threats to thinking and acting freely for the triumph of Human Security in this part of the world.

Thank you.

Lausanne, October 27, 2011.
